About the Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis Vaccine (DTAP vaccine and TDAP vaccines)
The DTAP and TDAP vaccines are administered to prevent Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (also known as the “Whooping Cough”).
DTAP is the childhood vaccine and TDAP is the “booster” shot. Children generally receive 5 DTAP vaccine doses at the following ages: 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15-18 months, and 4-6 years. However, immunity will diminish over time and therefore most doctors recommend a booster shot every ten years. This booster shot may be either TD (whooping cough not contained) or TDAP (whooping cough is contained).
The TDAP vaccine is essentially the same blend as DTAP except in lower doses, thus making TDAP the “booster” vaccine.
