Intussusception

The Relationship Between Intussusception &  the Rotavirus Vaccine

The rotavirus vaccine can cause intussusception. The age group most often affected by this adverse reaction are children. If your child received the rotavirus vaccine and developed intussusception or intussusception-like symptoms, your child may be entitled to compensation. Still not sure what intussusception is or how to spot its symptoms? We’ve added some information below to help.

What is Intussusception?

Intussusception is a serious disorder in which part of the intestine slides into an adjacent part of the intestine, similar to a telescope. This “telescoping” often blocks food or fluid from passing through. Intussusception also cuts off the blood supply to the part of the intestine that’s affected. Intussusception can lead to a tear in the bowel, infection, and death of bowel tissue.

What are the symptoms of Intussusception in children?

The first sign of intussusception in a child may be sudden and loud crying caused by abdominal pain. Infants who have abdominal pain may pull their knees to their chests when they cry. The pain of intussusception comes and goes, usually every 15 to 20 minutes at first. These painful episodes last longer and happen more often as time passes.

Other frequent signs and intussusception symptoms include:

  • Stool mixed with blood and mucus
  • Vomiting
  • A lump in the abdomen
  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Constipation

*It is important to remember that signs of abdominal pain may include recurrent bouts of pulling the knees to the chest and crying.*
